8A - Solving The Problem

The problem I have identified is the high utilities bills people receive due to wasted energy. People leave their heaters on when they are not using them at maximum capacity. This expounds unused energy and it contributes to high bills at the end of the month. This is cumbersome for the people paying the bills and for the environment.

Something that could help lessen these bills are radiators with built-in motion sensors. That way, they could turn on and off automatically depending on whether people are in the room. If the sensors were highly sensitive, they could make sure the radiators are as efficient as possible. This solution is sustainable and less expensive in the long-term.

  1. Hey Molly! I agree with you that energy bills are definitely something everyone would love to cut down on. In this situation though, there already exists a better solution than motion sensors. My dad set up a system in our house that automatically turns on the heat at a certain time of day so that when he gets home from work, its warm. He also set up the system to do the same for AC during the winter. Our water heater is also set up so that it only heats up one full tank of hot water per day. This forces us to take shorter showers, thus lowering the water and electricity bill. I'm not trying to bash your idea I promise! We're all in this together! What I mean by offering this information is that unfortunately for us, most of the ideas we come up with have already been thought of. The approach that I think we need to take is instead of trying to think of new ideas, we should try and approach opportunities by implementing solutions for one problem to another problem, which may or may not work better than any current solutions to that problem.

  2. Hi Molly! I remember reading one of your original solutions about the motion sensors for radiators, and I loved the idea! I think you clearly defined both the problem and presented a solution that you both have a lot of personal ties to and have done research in. I also liked how you tied the problem to both people's personal issues and environmental issues; I think it really helps expand your benefit and helps convince others that it needs a solution too!
